running the Profile Manager

Before trying to run the Profile Manager,
you must make absolutely sure that firefox.exe is not a running process.

Open the Windows Task Manager

Task Manager with firefox.exe highlighted

look for and highlight firefox.exe, and then click "End Process".
You need to find all instances of firefox.exe and close each one separately.

Close the Task Manager.

to run the Profile Manager
you need to start Firefox with the Profile manager switch
-p

( Note: If -p doesn't work, use -ProfileManager, as some versions require.
There must be a space before the hyphen. )

This method usually works for W2K and WinXP, when you used the installer version of Firefox. This probably won't work if you used a Zip-archive version of Firefox or have another version of Windows.
Start>Run> firefox.exe -p
W2K Run box with -p

If that didn't work or you are running a different version of Windows, you will need to use the entire (directory or folder) path to the Firefox executable;
the default location is normally:
C:\Program Files\Firefox\firefox\firefox.exe .
as in ->
Start>Run>
"C:\your-path-to\firefox.exe" -p

W2K Run box with -p

Here is a screenshot of what my Profile Manager dialog box.
All but the "Default User" are Profiles that I either created thru the Profile Manager or 'Cloned' from other Profiles.

if you don't know what the buttons do -> functions of the ProfileManager buttons

or you can start Firefox directly with a specific Profile
like this ->

Start>Run>
firefox.exe -p "Profile_name"

W2K Run box to run a specific Profile

or

Start>Run>
"C:\path-to\firefox.exe" -p "Profile"

W2K Run box to run a specific Profile
