how to enable the installation of extensions and themes
after performing an upgrade from a 1.0.x version to 1.5

type about:config in the URLbar / Navigation bar, and then hit Enter

Filter = xpinstall.enabled

Right-Click that preference and Select Toggle

about:config - xpinstall_not_enabled
The Value is what is important here, when set to false you are not able to install extensions or themes, and you will not be able to get automatic updates of the basic program from the Mozilla servers. You may get notice that updates are available, but they won't install if this preference is set to false.

This how it should look when that preference is set for being able to install extensions and themes. about:config - xpinstall_enabled

When you are finished close the window or tab that you were viewing about:config within and then select File > Exit to close Firefox. Wait a few seconds and then Restart Firefox, your adjusted setting will take set upon startup.
