Edit your profiles.ini file

Q: Why would a user want to or need to edit the profiles.ini file?

A: To let the Profile Manager know that you
have added a Profile to your Profiles folder;

  1. thru importing a Profile from another installation.

  2. or
  3. have imported a Profile from another machine.

  4. or
  5. thru Cloning a Profile.

  6. or
  7. to reflect changing the location of the
    entire Profile folder to a different folder or logical drive.

Firefox must be closed when performing these modifications!

  1. Find the file named profiles.ini that resides
    in the same folder as your Profile folder is located.
    as in
    C:\path-to\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\

  2. Open the profiles.ini file in a text program such as Notepad.

  3. Immediately upon opening profiles.ini do a "File" > "Save as..."
    to save the file as a backup with a suffix such as .bak or .old.

  4. Create a new entry in profiles.ini as shown in
    Profiles.ini Sample 2
    new entry = [Profile4]
    to reflect your new ( or cloned ) Profile.

    Profile name tip = use no spaces within a name
    use an underscore _ or a hyphen - instead.

  5. Save your modified file as profiles.ini in the original location.

When starting Firefox use the Profile manager switch
-p in the command box.

( Note: If -p doesn't work, use -ProfileManager instead. There must
be a space between the quote ending the path-to and the hyphen.)

as in
->Start>Run>
"C:\path-to\firefox.exe" -p

or you can start Firefox directly
with the cloned, imported, or moved Profile
like this
->Start>Run>
"C:\path-to\firefox.exe" -p "profilename"
